An award-winning combination
Imagine the comforts of a fine hotel combined with the personal welcome you'd expect when you stay with friends and you can begin to understand what makes Avalanche Homestead such a unique experience. Frank and Faye Biddle have won both local and national tourism awards for this beautiful property - a working sheep and cattle station in the spectacular Tinderry Mountains just 45 km from Canberra, Australia's National Capital.
Absorb the peace
The mountain rises behind you, taming the wind. In front of you, the ranges extend into the distance. Whether you're staying in the homestead, in its grandstand position on the spur, or in the guest house nestled in a small gully, you hear little but the birds and the peaceful sounds of farm animals. In such tranquil surroundings, time seems to move at a slower pace and city stresses melt away.
Try life on the land
There are always cattle to muster, sheep to shear, orphaned animals to bottle-feed. You can join in the work of this successful farming property or simply observe the bustle from your spot by the pool, from the comfort of the luxury four-wheel drive vehicle or from horseback. We have quiet horses available if your riding skills are rusty.

Meet the locals
Along with the adjoining nature reserve, the property is home to many native animals and birds. You'll see plenty of kangaroos and wombats, particularly if you take a night tour. Raucous cockatoos and galahs are regular visitors, together with spectacular parrots and the ever-laughing kookaburras. Wedge-tailed eagles can be spotted overhead, while if you're lucky you might see a lyrebird dance in the forest.

Relax in style
Dinner at Avalanche Homestead is by candlelight in the main dining room, where fine food is complemented by an informal atmosphere and conversations with other guests - one of the many highlights of your stay at Avalanche Homestead. During the day, lunch by the large swimming pool is appealing, while the library includes many volumes that give you an insight into Australia's heritage.
